The following opportunities help sustain the Red River are only possible through the generous support of our donors and the coordination with our partners. Now through February 13th, you can support River Keepers opportunities to sustain the Red River and know that you are making a direct impact in your community.
Reforest the Red: For almost 20 years, thousands of volunteers have planted tens of thousands of trees and shrubs along the Red River to create a buffer, maintain riverbank stability, encourage growth of native plants, improve water quality (Fargo-Moorhead’s drinking water source), and provide habitat for wildlife. “Congratulations on your volunteer effort yesterday! They just keep getting better….Kudo’s again on the great job you and your crew did. My volunteers loved it and are already clamoring about next year as well as any other opportunities we can assist with.” – Company volunteer organizer

Storm Drain Marking Program: For 29 years, this program has raised awareness that everything going down our storm drains goes directly to the Red River without being treated. Learn more here.

Riverbank, drain and on-the-water cleanups: One of our first volunteer projects was to work with volunteers to pick up trash along the Red River. Volunteers have told us it is a fun teambuilding experience that instills a sense of community pride, allows them to get fresh air and exercise, spend time with friends and family, and enjoy the Red River. Learn more here.

T-shirt to Tote Project: Since 2008, volunteers have been making bags out of T-shirts that River Keepers then distributes throughout the community. Plastic bags are commonly found in trees along the Red River, and collecting these bags for proper disposal is often difficult. In addition, it takes hundreds of years for a plastic bag to degrade in the landfill. Learn more here.

Water quality monitoring: River Keepers has collected 25 years of water quality data so that we can see how different parameters change as they go through the urban area and be able to help identify issues if any arise. Learn more here.

“It’s difficult at times to know how can I make a difference, how can I be helpful. To have an organization like River Keepers working diligently and creatively to put together opportunities for community members like me who want to help take care of the river, to help take care of the environment, to get people engaged with the watershed, with this natural landscape in our community, I’m really grateful for that. I’m glad that it’s easy to get involved and that there’s lots of different ways to do that.” – Joe Halvorson, volunteer.

What does River Keepers Keep? The Red River.
